For historic vehicles 60+ years old, Maryland charges a one-time $50 Class L registration instead of a yearly amount. That’s why the estimate may look different from standard registrations.

Maryland MVA Fee Estimator – Know Your State Fees Before You Visit

When you’re buying, selling, or registering a vehicle in Maryland, one of the most common questions is: “How much will the MVA charge me?” This page lets you preview the official Maryland MVA fees before you walk into our office, so there are fewer surprises and faster visits. This estimator is provided by Maryland Express Services (MES), an MVA-authorized tag & title agent in Ellicott City. It uses Maryland’s published fee tables for:

  • Title fees for most standard Maryland vehicle titles
  • Registration / plate fees for Passenger, Motorcycle, Truck, and Historic plates
  • 30-Day Temporary Tags (VR-129)
  • EV / PHEV surcharges based on your registration term

How to Use the Maryland MVA Fee Estimator

  1. Select the services you need. Most customers choose Title + Registration / Plates for a purchase. If you are only renewing plates or already have a Maryland title, choose Registration / Plates only. If you just need a temporary tag, choose 30-Day Temporary Tag.
  2. Enter your vehicle details. Choose your vehicle type (Passenger, Motorcycle, Truck, Historic), the correct weight or class, plate type, and whether the vehicle is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or full electric (EV) so any surcharges are included.
  3. Enter the sale price / taxable value. For title work and temp tags, Maryland calculates excise tax at 6.5% of the taxable value. This is usually the sale price, but the MVA may use book value if the price is unusually low.
  4. Review the breakdown. The results table shows each part separately: Excise Tax, Title Fee, Registration / Plates, EV/PHEV surcharge, and Temporary Tag, plus the total estimated fees to MVA.

Is this an official MVA calculator?

No. This tool is provided by Maryland Express Services (MES) for convenience and is based on current public Maryland MVA fee schedules. It is not an official tool of the MVA, but it is designed to be as accurate and transparent as possible for standard transactions.

Why is my final MVA receipt a little different from this estimate?

Small differences can happen if the MVA uses a different taxable value (for example, book value on a low sale price), if local surcharges apply (such as certain Baltimore transactions), or if your vehicle or plate type falls under a special rule. We’ll always review your paperwork and explain any differences before we finalize your work.

Does this include MES service fees?

No. This page only shows the state fees that go to Maryland MVA. Our MES service fee for handling your transaction is separate and will be quoted at the counter based on your situation. In most cases, we can tell you both numbers (MVA + MES) in one clear breakdown.

Can you help me if I have flags, tickets, or toll issues?

Many flags (tolls, emissions, insurance, some tickets) must be cleared directly with the agency that placed the hold (CCU, EZ-Pass, court, etc.) before MVA will let us finish your work. We can look up your record, explain what the flag codes mean, and point you to the right place to resolve them so you don’t waste trips.

What if my vehicle is salvage, rebuilt, or bought from out of state?

Salvage and rebuilt titles, out-of-state purchases, and vehicles with liens often have extra steps and different documentation. In many of those cases the fee structure is similar, but the paperwork is stricter. Contact MES with your title, bill of sale, and any MVA letters and we’ll tell you whether we can process it in-office or if it must go directly to MVA.

Do I need an appointment to use MES?

Walk-ins are welcomed during our posted hours, and appointments are available if you prefer a set time. You can call, email, or use our contact form to confirm what documents you need before you come in.
