How Maryland Calculates Out-of-State Vehicle Tax
Maryland doesn’t always charge the full 6.5% excise tax when you bring a vehicle from another state.
Here’s how it works:
- If you recently moved to Maryland (within 60 days), you may only pay the difference between your previous state’s tax rate and Maryland’s 6.5%
- If your previous state’s rate is equal to or higher than 6.5%, the tax may be as low as $100
- If your previous state had no tax, Maryland may charge the full 6.5% of the vehicle value
👉 Timing matters. Waiting too long can change how your tax is calculated.
When Maryland Charges Full Excise Tax
In some cases, Maryland will charge the full 6.5%:
- You moved to Maryland more than 60 days ago
- The vehicle is considered newer (6 model years or less)
- No qualifying credit from your previous state
For older vehicles (7+ years), Maryland often applies a flat fee instead of full tax.
Active-Duty Military Exception
If you are an active-duty service member, you may qualify for a tax exemption if the vehicle is already titled in your name.
To qualify:
- The vehicle must be currently titled in the service member’s name
- You must provide proof such as military orders or DD-214
👉 If the vehicle is owned by a company or another person, this exemption typically does not apply.
Common Mistakes We See
- Waiting more than 60 days to title the vehicle
- Assuming your previous tax automatically transfers
- Using the wrong vehicle value
- Thinking a down payment affects excise tax (it doesn’t)
These small mistakes can lead to higher taxes than expected.
