How Maryland Calculates Out-of-State Vehicle Tax

Maryland doesn’t always charge the full 6.5% excise tax when you bring a vehicle from another state.

Here’s how it works:

  • If you recently moved to Maryland (within 60 days), you may only pay the difference between your previous state’s tax rate and Maryland’s 6.5%
  • If your previous state’s rate is equal to or higher than 6.5%, the tax may be as low as $100
  • If your previous state had no tax, Maryland may charge the full 6.5% of the vehicle value

👉 Timing matters. Waiting too long can change how your tax is calculated.

When Maryland Charges Full Excise Tax

In some cases, Maryland will charge the full 6.5%:

  • You moved to Maryland more than 60 days ago
  • The vehicle is considered newer (6 model years or less)
  • No qualifying credit from your previous state

For older vehicles (7+ years), Maryland often applies a flat fee instead of full tax.

Active-Duty Military Exception

If you are an active-duty service member, you may qualify for a tax exemption if the vehicle is already titled in your name.

To qualify:

  • The vehicle must be currently titled in the service member’s name
  • You must provide proof such as military orders or DD-214

👉 If the vehicle is owned by a company or another person, this exemption typically does not apply.

Common Mistakes We See

  • Waiting more than 60 days to title the vehicle
  • Assuming your previous tax automatically transfers
  • Using the wrong vehicle value
  • Thinking a down payment affects excise tax (it doesn’t)

These small mistakes can lead to higher taxes than expected.

FAQ

How is Maryland vehicle excise tax calculated for out-of-state vehicles?

Maryland typically charges 6.5% excise tax, but if you recently moved (within 60 days), you may only pay the difference between your previous state’s tax rate and Maryland’s rate. In some cases, the tax may be as low as $100.

What happens if I moved to Maryland more than 60 days ago?

If you moved more than 60 days ago, Maryland may charge the full 6.5% excise tax based on the vehicle’s value. Older vehicles (7 model years or more) may qualify for a reduced flat fee instead.

Does my previous state’s tax reduce what I owe in Maryland?

Yes—if you moved within 60 days. Maryland may give credit for tax paid in your previous state. If your previous state’s rate is lower than 6.5%, you may pay the difference.

What if my previous state has no vehicle tax?

If your previous state has 0% tax, Maryland may charge the full 6.5% excise tax based on the vehicle’s value.

What value does Maryland use to calculate excise tax?

Maryland may use the clean retail value of the vehicle (such as NADA value) or the purchase price, depending on the situation.

Do older vehicles have lower excise tax in Maryland?

Yes. Vehicles that are 7 model years or older often qualify for a flat excise tax instead of the full 6.5% rate.

Does a down payment reduce Maryland excise tax?

No. A down payment does not affect the taxable value used to calculate Maryland excise tax.

Are military members exempt from Maryland excise tax?

Active-duty service members may be exempt only if the vehicle is already titled in their name and proper documentation (such as military orders or DD-214) is provided.

What happens if I wait too long to title my vehicle in Maryland?

If you wait more than 60 days after moving to Maryland, you may lose eligibility for tax credit and be required to pay the full excise tax.

Is this estimator 100% accurate?

No. This tool provides an estimate based on common Maryland MVA rules. Final tax is determined by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.
