Let’s be transparent—this builds trust instantly.
Just bought a car? The $200 title fee applies, and the 6.5% excise tax is based on the purchase price (or the MVA’s book value if the price is much lower than book value). Vehicles 7 years and older are taxed on the greater of the purchase price or $640.
Moving your own out-of-state title to Maryland? The $200 title fee applies too. The excise tax for a car you already own is not based on a purchase price. The MVA uses its retail value, and if you moved to Maryland in the last 60 days you may get credit for tax paid in your previous state (for a car 6 model years or newer, the MVA charges $100 if your previous state’s rate was 6.5% or higher). After 60 days there is no credit. Check the MVA excise tax page for your case.
MES is an authorized agent, not the MVA. The MVA sets these amounts.
This is an estimate only. Final fees are determined by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration based on your specific transaction. MES service fees are separate.
