When Is a Maryland Safety Inspection NOT Required?
Inspection is usually not required when:
- The vehicle is already titled in Maryland
- Ownership is transferred between Maryland residents
- You are adding or removing a name on an existing Maryland title (if it has already passed inspection)
Inspection rules are separate from excise tax rules. Even if you qualify for a family excise tax exemption, inspection may still be required if the vehicle is coming from out of state.

What Is a Maryland Safety Inspection?
A Maryland Safety Inspection is a comprehensive, one-time, 100-point safety check performed by a licensed inspection station under Maryland State Police standards.
It is not a scoring system.
To pass inspection:
The vehicle must have zero failed items.
If any required safety item fails, the vehicle fails inspection.
What Does the Maryland Safety Inspection Check?
The inspection covers major safety systems including:
- Brake pad thickness and brake line condition
- Steering mechanism and components
- Suspension system
- Tire tread depth and tire condition
- Lights and signals
- Exhaust system
- Structural integrity
- Window tint compliance
Every required safety standard must be met before the vehicle can pass.
Maryland Rust and Structural Failure Rules
Maryland safety inspections reject vehicles with rust that causes significant structural weakening of the frame, body, or floor pans.
The vehicle will fail inspection if there is:
- Rusted-through rocker panels
- Corrosion weakening structural frame components
- Heavily pitted or leaking metal brake lines
- Severely corroded suspension components affecting vehicle stability
Surface rust is usually acceptable.
Structural, functional, or penetrative corrosion is not.
Vehicles coming from northern states like Pennsylvania, New York, or New Jersey often fail due to corrosion-related issues.
Maryland Window Tint Inspection Rules
Maryland enforces strict window tint standards during safety inspection.
The vehicle will fail inspection if:
- Window tint allows less than 35% light transmission
- Tint extends below the AS1 line or more than 5 inches from the top of the windshield
- The third brake light (center rear brake light) is covered or obstructed by tint
Tint violations must be corrected before the vehicle can pass inspection.

What Happens If the Vehicle Fails Inspection?
If the vehicle fails:
- You have 30 days or 1,000 miles (whichever comes first) to repair the defects
- The vehicle must return to the same inspection station for re-inspection
- Only the failed items are rechecked within that period
If the deadline expires, a new full inspection may be required.
How Long Is the Inspection Valid?
Once passed:
- The Maryland Safety Inspection certificate is valid for 90 days
- The vehicle must be titled and registered within that period
If 90 days passes before registration, a new inspection is required.
