Graphic: Maryland 30-day temp tag can't be extended; a dealer 60-day tag can get one 30-day extension from the dealer

Can You Extend a Temporary Tag in Maryland? The Honest Answer (30-Day vs. Dealer 60-Day)

Short answer: it depends on which temp tag you have. Maryland’s 30-day temporary registration for getting a safety inspection cannot be extended, and you can’t get a second one. A dealer’s 60-day temp tag is different: the dealer that issued it can file one 30-day extension for paperwork delays, as long as it’s done before the tag runs out.

“Can I get an extension on my temporary tag?” is one of the most common questions we hear at our Reisterstown office from drivers in Owings Mills and across Baltimore County. Here’s the honest answer for each type, and what to do instead.

Can you extend temp tags in Maryland? Quick comparison

  • 30-day inspection temp (VR-129): issued by the MVA or a licensed tag and title agent. State fee $50. One per vehicle. No extension, no second temp.
  • Dealer 60-day temp: issued only by a dealer, for a car that has already passed the Maryland Safety Inspection. One 30-day extension, filed by the issuing dealer, for paperwork delays only.
  • 24-hour registration: a different, very short permit. See temp tags vs. 24-hour registration.

Can I extend a 30-day temp tag in Maryland? No, and there's no second one

The MVA’s temporary registration page is clear on this point: β€œonly one (1) 30-day temporary registration may be issued.” In other words, don’t apply until the car is actually ready for its safety inspection. Maryland law (Transportation Article Β§13-410) backs this up. It’s one per vehicle, whether you get it from the MVA or from an agent like us. Going to a different office or agent won’t get you a second temp.

Searches like “temp tag extension form” or “can i extend my temporary tag online” often turn up answers for other states. In Maryland there’s no extension form and no online renewal for the 30-day inspection temp.

For the full rules (who qualifies, what to bring, the VR-129), see our 30-day temporary tag policy guide and how to get a 30-day temporary tag.

How to get temp tags in MD without running out of time

Since you only get one, timing is everything:

  1. Title the car now. You can title a vehicle that still needs repairs. The title is mailed to you, and you don’t need the temp yet.
  2. Get it ready and book the inspection. Make repairs first and schedule with a licensed inspection station.
  3. Then get the 30-day temp. Apply once the inspection is booked. The state fee is $50 (see MVA fees). MES can issue it.
  4. After it passes, finish registration. Submit the inspection certificate within 90 days of passing. Our tag and title checklist lists what to bring.

What happens if your temp tags expire? No grace period

Some online comments say “just drive on them.” Don’t. Once a 30-day temp expires, the car is unregistered. Don’t drive it. Have it towed or trailered to the inspection station. Driving an unregistered vehicle can lead to a fine. You'll also need to return the plates; otherwise, the registration can be flagged. If this has already happened, read temp tag expired before inspection.

Can a car dealership extend temp tags? Yes, once, for the 60-day tag

Maryland dealers sell used cars with the Maryland Safety Inspection already passed, which is why only dealers issue 60-day temp tags. If your plates or title are held up, here’s how the extension works under MVA Bulletin D-10-25-03:

  • The dealer that issued the tag files it, through the MVA’s electronic registration (ERT) system. You can’t get it yourself at an MVA counter.
  • One 30-day extension per tag. The dealer must select a valid reason, such as waiting on a lien payoff, the title, or paperwork.
  • No prior approval needed from MVA Business Licensing, so it can usually be done quickly.
  • It covers paperwork delays, not a missing inspection.
  • A tag and title service handling the deal for the dealer may also be able to process it.

My temp tag is expiring and my plates haven't come. What do I do?

  1. Contact the dealer’s title or finance office before day 60 and ask them to file the 30-day extension.
  2. Ask what’s holding things up (lien payoff, title, paperwork) so they can pick the right reason.
  3. If the dealer won’t respond or refuses, contact MVA Business Licensing and Compliance, which oversees dealers: 410-787-2952 or mvabldisd@mdot.maryland.gov.
  4. Don’t drive past the expiration date while you wait.
